How to Propagate Plumeria from Cuttings

Plumeria IntroAlthough plumeria look exotic and fragile, as long as they are protected from freezing temperatures, they can thrive as a container plant or in the ground in full sun. Most varieties are deciduous during the winter, resume their foliar growth in spring and bear their perfumed clusters of blossoms in summer. Available in many colors, including white, pink, red or combinations of colors with yellow centers, water regularly except when dormant, provide excellent drainage and protect from frost. Propagate new plants from cuttings during the warmer months of late spring through summer. When cut, they exude a milky-like latex that may irritate sensitive skin, so wear protective gloves when handling.

Supplies Needed
:
  • PlumeriaRooting hormone containing indolebutyric or naphthalene acetic acid
  • 1 gallon plastic pots with drainage holes
  • Well-draining cactus mix
  • Denali Gold or comparable product rich in humic acids
  • Stakes for support
  • Plastic plant ties
  • Organic granular fertilizer
  • Seaweed extract liquid fertilizer

Instructions:

1.) Cut a 12-to-18 inch branch and allow to callus over for several days (up to 1 week) in order to harden off P1

2.) Place the cutting in a shaded, protected area where there is also good air circulation P2

3.) Before planting, dip the cut end into a rooting hormone P3

4.) In a one-gallon plastic pot, mix in 3 parts planting mixture with 1 part Denali Gold and moisten the medium thoroughly P4

5.) Set the cutting vertically into the soil to approximately half its length and tamp the soil around it P5

6.) Tie loosely to a stake for support

7.) Place in full or filtered sun

8.) For newly planted cuttings, withhold watering for a couple of weeks to help avoid rot

9.) In about 6 weeks, the cutting should have rooted P9

10.) When there is foliar growth, it can be transplanted into a larger container or directly into the ground

11.) Fertilize in the early spring with a slow-release or organic fertilizer and supplement with a liquid seaweed extract during growth period
