Saturday, March 20 is the first day of spring and that means in warmer regions of the United States, it is time to uproot cool season crops such as carrots, lettuce, radishes, cabbage and kale and make way for warm season edibles like tomatoes. Where frost is lingering, start your late spring/summer veggies from seed indoors. The following varieties produce a rainbow of colors and luscious tastes:
Big Zac
bears extra-large, 1-3 pound, juicy red behemoths combining a perfect balance of acid and sugar flavors and is the perfect variety for slicing. If you want a 5-pound champion, leave one flower on the plant and disbud all the others.
Sun Sugar
is a golden-orange cherry tomato that scores the highest on the Brix scale (a measurement of the sugar content), closely followed by another golden cherry tomato, Sungold.
Aunt Ruby's German Green
is one of the largest green beefsteaks and is outstanding in salads and in tomato sandwiches.
Japanese Black Trifele
is red with a purplish overcast, about the shape and size of a pear, rich flavor and very vigorous.
Pineapple
is another large, beefsteak weighing up to 2 pounds each with gorgeous red streaks throughout the yellow fruit and oh so sweet.
Tomaccio
is a cherry tomato prized for its sweetness that intensifies even more when dried. You can pop the dried tomatoes in your mouth like raisins.
