2010 Horticulturists of the Year

Bruce and Sharon Accepting AwardThe culmination of over 50 years of work in the gardening arena was recognized Monday, August 10th, as Bruce and Sharon Asakawa (that’s right, GardenLife’s very own Sharon!) were named and honored by the San Diego Horticultural Society as the 2010 Horticulturists of the Year. Bruce and Sharon are the 15th recipients of this esteemed award, in league with some of San Diego’s finest horticulturalists.

Approximately 400 attendees arrived in good spirits and were each presented with a free one gallon size SunPatiens, the first impatiens to finally grow in the sun. Sharon gave an excellent presentation on plants growing in the Asakawa’s garden and Bruce gave a touching synopsis of his family’s background in the gardening industry and the history of horticulture in San Diego.

John and Bryan RoastSpotted among the crowd were notables like Debra Lee Baldwin, the acclaimed author of succulent books, Bob Reidmuller, who provides the Cactus Corner tips on the GardenLife Radio Show, Walter Andersen Jr., the owner of Walter Andresen’s Nursery and hundreds of f
aithful radio listeners from the past 20 years. Bryan Main and John Bagnasco entertained the gathering with a   “good natured” roast. Our favorite moment as Bruce and Sharon answered questions: When they were asked how they manage watering all the plants on their almost 2-acre property, Bruce gave a very detailed explanation, which included phrases like percolation rate, evaporation rate, tree canopy, gallons per hour… after which Sharon chimed in with, “And when I see the plants wilting, I water them.” Join us in congratulating one of our favorite couples.
