The Altai Mountain range winds its way through Russia, Mongolia, China, and Kazakhstan and was virtually unknown to westerners until the 19th century. Medieval cartographers often designated such unknown places with the inscription, hic sunt dracones (here are dragons). It is this isolated area that was the birthplace of one of the world’s best cool weather tomatoes.
