Cleistocactus strausii is a columnar cactus, forming columns to 4" in diameter that are densely covered with silvery white glistening spines. Also known as "Snow Pole". Offsets readily and blooms usually at 2'-3' in height. Will grow to approximately 10' in height in time. Long, tubular purplish red flowers appear in January and last through spring, much to the delight of hummingbirds. Native habitat is Bolivia. Can be used as a patio plant, or planted in the garden in frost free areas. Prefers a porous cactus soil with adequate drainage. Bright light to full sun. Water thoroughly when soil is dry to the touch. Protect from frost.
